Passenger Endorsement Practice Test

The Passenger endorsement (P on your license) is for driving a bus or other vehicle built to carry passengers. This free practice test helps you prepare for the CDL Passenger Endorsement test. It focuses on the extra inspection items a bus has and on keeping riders safe from the first stop to the last.

Question 1 of 100 right

A rider sets a carry-on bag in the aisle near the door. What should the driver require before leaving?

Inspecting a bus

Inside the bus, check that handholds, railings, floor covering, signaling devices, and emergency exit handles are safe, and that every seat is fastened down securely.

Never drive with an emergency exit door or window open. If the bus has a red emergency door light, it has to work and be on whenever the outside lights are on. A roof hatch can be locked partly open for fresh air, but not as a habit, and an open hatch makes the bus taller.

Riders and baggage

Keep carry-on bags out of the aisle and doorways, and secure baggage so riders can get out through any door or window. No rider may stand forward of the rear of the driver's seat. On buses built for standing riders, standees stay behind the standee line.

Explain the carrier's rules at the start of the trip, not after someone breaks one. Don't chat with riders while you drive, and scan the inside of the bus as well as the road. If a rider is drunk or disruptive, don't put them off somewhere unsafe. The next scheduled stop or a well-lit place with other people around may be safer.

Stops, fueling, and breakdowns

At stops, announce where you are, why you stopped, when you'll leave, and the bus number. Avoid fueling with riders on board unless you have to, and never refuel in a closed building with riders on board.

Don't tow or push a disabled bus with riders on board unless getting off would be unsafe, and then only to the nearest safe place. On buses that have a brake-door interlock, don't use it in place of the parking brake.
