CDL manual by state

Official commercial driver license handbooks from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each link goes directly to your state's licensing agency.

Every state publishes an official CDL manual to help commercial driver applicants prepare for knowledge tests. The links below take you to each state's current CDL handbook or CDL information page on the official state DMV or licensing agency website.

Use your state's manual as your primary study reference. While the federal CDL standards are consistent, states may have specific requirements, testing procedures, or application steps that differ. Always check your state's official resources before testing.

About these links

Most links go directly to the state's official CDL manual PDF or CDL information page. A few states link to the agency homepage because their CDL manual URL could not be verified at this time — in those cases, navigate to the Commercial Driver License section from the homepage to find the manual.

Links were verified on October 3, 2026. If a link does not work, visit your state's main DMV or licensing agency website and look for "commercial driver license" or "CDL manual."

Most states provide their CDL manual as a downloadable PDF. A few states present the manual as a series of web pages or require you to request a printed copy. The manual is always free from the official state agency.

Next steps after reading your state's manual

Once you've studied your state's CDL manual, test your knowledge with our free CDL practice tests. We cover all eight topics: General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, and endorsements for HazMat, Tank Vehicles, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, and School Bus.

Every practice question includes a detailed explanation, so when you miss one, you know exactly what to review.

For state-specific resources, see our CDL practice test pages by state, which combine your state's official manual, practice tests, and directory of registered CDL schools. For additional study guidance, see our CDL study guides, including CDL rule changes heading into 2027 and how to get a CDL in 2027.
