CDL practice test by state
State-specific CDL study pages for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each page includes links to your state's official CDL manual, free practice tests, and registered CDL schools.
While the federal CDL knowledge test standards are consistent across all states (requiring 80% to pass under 49 CFR 383.135), each state administers its own tests and publishes its own CDL manual. Use your state's page below to find state-specific resources alongside our free practice tests.
Every state page links to the official state CDL manual, the state's licensing agency, our complete set of CDL practice tests (General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, and all five endorsements), and the directory of FMCSA-registered CDL schools in that state.
Practice tests included on every state page
Each state page links to all eight CDL knowledge test topics. These practice tests are the same for every state — they cover the federal CDL standards that apply nationwide:
- General Knowledge — required for everyone getting a Class A or Class B CDL
- Air Brakes — required if your vehicle has air brakes (skip it and you get an air brake restriction)
- Combination Vehicles — required for Class A (tractor-trailer) drivers
- HazMat (H) — endorsement for hauling hazardous materials that require placards
- Tank Vehicles (N) — endorsement for hauling liquids or gases in a tank
- Doubles/Triples (T) — endorsement for pulling double or triple trailers
- Passenger (P) — endorsement for driving buses and other passenger vehicles
- School Bus (S) — endorsement for school bus drivers (requires Passenger endorsement too)
The federal passing standard is 80% for every CDL knowledge test. Most states give about 50 General Knowledge questions, 25 Air Brakes questions, and 20 Combination questions. Endorsement tests are typically 20 to 30 questions each.
State-specific information on each page
Each state page includes:
- Link to the official state CDL manual and state licensing agency
- Name of the state's licensing agency (DMV, DPS, etc.)
- Links to that state's CDL school directory, with the count of FMCSA-registered training locations
- Links to filtered school pages (Class B training, hazmat theory, school bus endorsement, passenger endorsement) where they exist for that state
- Link to the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirement, which applies in every state
We do not invent state-specific facts such as test fees, exact question counts, passing scores beyond the federal 80% minimum, or age requirements. Those details change and vary by license type. For official licensing decisions, eligibility, fees, and test scheduling, contact your state's licensing agency directly.

Entry-Level Driver Training requirement
Federal law requires Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for most CDL applicants obtaining a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding a hazmat (H), passenger (P), or school bus (S) endorsement for the first time. Training must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider before taking the CDL skills test.
